Sarah grew up in Orange City, Iowa and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. She and her husband Jeff have two young children.

"When I taught kindergarten, I was pregnant with our first child. A little boy asked what we were going to name the body. I was 'I don't know yet, Travis. What do you think we should name him or her?' His suggestion: 'Tarzan.' That didn't make the cut, and our daughter Megan still giggles about it."
